HILARY DAVIDSON – Don’t Look Down

Before she began penning captivating crime fiction, she was a journalist. She got her start as an intern at Harper’s Magazine in New York and then joined the staff of Canadian Living magazine in Toronto. After deciding that she’d rather write than edit, she left her day job to freelance full-time. That decision led to the composition of 18 nonfiction books (17 of them for Frommer’s Travel Guides) and articles for a number of publications including Discover, Martha Stewart Weddings, American Archaeology, Fitness, and Reader’s Digest.

Her debut novel, The Damage Done, won both the Anthony and the Crime-Spree Award for Best First Novel. Two more novels completed the trilogy, that I’m sure we’ll talk about at some point in our conversation today. Today’s guest has also written for several Anthology volumes. And… we’ll explore that as well.

We’re going to begin our adventure, however, talking about her latest release in the Shadows of New York series: Don’t Look Down. It’s hot off the presses, thanks to Thomas & Mercer Publishing and Amazon. Crime novelist, Hilary Davidson is our tour guide for today’s adventure…

A gripping mystery about a sinister murder that everyone wants to stay buried—except one dogged NYPD detective…

Jo Greaver is a model of success. Young and ambitious, she’s built a thriving beauty business from nothing. But she has secrets she’ll do anything to keep buried. When her blackmailer offers to meet, Jo expects to pay him off—but gets a bullet instead. Bleeding and in shock, Jo flees with no one to turn to.

When NYPD detective Sheryn Sterling and her partner, Rafael Mendoza, find Andray Baxter murdered in his own home—shot through the heart—everything points to Jo as the killer. Her blood is at the scene, and so are disturbing photos of her taken as a young teen. But Sheryn has doubts. Was the kindhearted Andray really a criminal? Why did he repeatedly report finding spyware in his apartment? Was there something shady about Jo’s sister dying a year earlier? Something’s not right, and it’s up to Sheryn to piece together the sinister puzzle, no matter the cost…

A collection of chilling short-stories compiled by Lawrence Block…

The crime fiction canopy’s a broad one, with room to give shelter to writing of all sorts, as editor Lawrence Block shows with At Home in the Dark: “Some of these stories have one or both feet planted in another genre. James Reasoner’s story is a period western, Joe Lansdale’s is bleakly dystopian, and Joe Hill’s novelette slithers through a little doorway into another world. “And now that I’ve singled out those three, I suppose I should go ahead and list the rest of the gang: N. J. Ayres, Laura Benedict, Jill D. Block, Richard Chizmar, Hilary Davidson, Jim Fusilli, Elaine Kagan, Warren Moore, Joyce Carol Oates, Ed Park, Nancy Pickard, Thomas Pluck, Wallace Stroby, and Duane Swierczynski. “If you’re looking for a common denominator, two come to mind. They’re all dark stories, with nothing cozy or comforting about them. And every last one of them packs a punch. “Which is to say that they’re all very much At Home in the Dark—and we can thank O. Henry, master of the surprise ending, for our title. ‘Turn up the lights,’ he said on his deathbed. ‘I don’t want to go home in the dark.’”

A Collection of Short Stories inspired by the music of Bruce Springsteen…

Like some born killers, this pairing of crime stories and the songs of Bruce Springsteen is a natural one. Each of the accomplished authors in this unique anthology chose a Springsteen title as a starting point, and in the criminally inclined spirit of the Boss, drove headlong to wherever that inspiration called.

The destinations are as wildly diverse and far-reaching as the songs that influenced them. Some arrive at hope and redemption; others end up smoking in a ditch. One thing’s for sure: you sign up for this ride, and Trouble in the Heartland will transport you somewhere unforgettable.

Lynne Barrett (Dancing in the Dark) Eric Beetner (Up All Night) Richard Brewer (Last to Die) Jamez Chang (This Little Light of Mine) Jen Conley (Hard to Be a Saint in the City) Mike Creeden (Something in the Night) Lincoln Crisler (Born to Run) Hilary Davidson (Hungry Heart) Chris DeWildt (Glory Days) Les Edgerton (The Iceman) Peter Farris (What Love Can Do) Paul J. What is a goal? It’s been defined in many ways, most of them so complex that things get fuzzy and complicated. Put simply, a goal is something you want to do. PUSH is designed to help readers think about things more simply. Identify your goals and put forth the simple, dedicated effort to achieve them.

You may not realize it, but you’re being watched. It happens each day in the most undetectable way. Somewhere, someone is watching. You touch more lives and topple more dominoes than you could ever imagine. For someone, you are the light in their darkness or the example to which they aspire.

Why do you do what you do? It’s a useful question to ponder. If you knew that no one would hear your song, would you still sing? Knowing that the chairs in the auditorium will be empty, will you still take the stage and dance just as enthusiastically? Explore why you do what you do and develop self-trust and quiet confidence.
